WORKSHOP: Atchooo! Foley Workshop for Families

Join sound artist, composer and arts broadcaster Fari Bradley (Resonance FM) for a fun family workshop to explore the art of foley; the live recreation of sound effects for use in film. Drawing on Mika Rottenberg’s masterful use of sound in her films for comic and dramatic effect, this interactive session introduces children and adults to producing sound effects through manipulating objects such as watermelons and frozen cabbages.

Ideal for children aged 8 plus and their parents.
All welcome and free.

Learn how to make botanic inks from plants and use other natural materials such as ochre and rust in this workshop with Catherine Lewis. Learn about the history and traditions of botanic inks, make and use your own inks, create drawing tools from foraged natural materials and use flowers and berries to make beautiful marks onto cloth and paper creating your own sample book.

Come and join us and become a wicker architect for the day! Complementing our exhibition Haptic Tacit – in search of the vernacular we will echo early architectural forms, shapes and techniques using lath and wattle to make play houses from willow and found materials. A fantastic day out for all the family learning skills which you can then apply in your own gardens.

The wicker houses will remain in situ to be played in by visiting children.

Not suitable for unaccompanied children under 12.

Hand craft a vegetable tanned leather tote bag in this two day workshop with Nia Denman. You will learn basic leathercraft skills including cutting leather, burnishing, bevelling, hole punching, hand stitching, riveting and embossing. You can also personalise your bag with letter stamps. Your hand stitched tote will be durable and improve with age as it develops its own patina.

Catherine Lewis is a visual artist and lecturer in printed textiles and surface pattern design. She is the director of ColourField studio natural print and dye company where she has developed her own natural dyeing and printmaking processes.

This talk will cover the history of botanic ink making as well as explaining many of the fascinating techniques and materials involved.
