Culture Colony Vision

Director, Filmmaker, Organisation

Culture Colony creates all of the video content for the Culture Colony web site and provides a video service for the wider creative community. We have 30 years experience of programme making for television and now concentrate almost exclusively on the arts as online video content. CC makes films for and with individual artists, artist groups and large arts organisations. These films range from short documentation and promotional films to full blown feature documentaries. CC can also provide facilities for live broadcasting to the internet enhancing the potential audience for events whether its a single person performance in the artists studio or an international conference. And, as its live, there is also an opportunity for instantaneous global audience participation through social media.

CC has made films about artists and their work with the Arts Council of Wales, Arts Council England, Wales Arts International, the National Museum of Wales, the National Eisteddfod, National Theatre Wales, Royal Shakespeare Company, The National Library of Wales, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, South London Gallery, MAC Birmingham, Kew Gardens, Ruthin Craft Centre, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Pontio, Galeri Caernarfon, Oriel Davies, Cardiff Contemporary Arts Festival, Artes Mundi, Llawn Arts Festival, blinc digital arts festival, Experimentica Performance Arts Festival, The National Trust, Snowdonia National Park, The Woodland Trust, BBC 4, BBC Wales, Channel 4, ITV1 Wales, S4C, The Forest of Dean, Cardiff International Airport, 2012 Cultural Olympiad, NOW Gallery, University of Southampton, Sculpture Cymru, Royal College of Music, David Nash, Heather and Ivan Morison, Walker and Bromwich, Shani Rhys James, Ivor Davies, Bedwyr Williams, Peter Lord, and many, many more.

Our extensive archive is used in television productions and by other organisations.

We make films to convey the creative integrity in the art that we portray. In many of our productions we buck the current trend of short snappy films and make longer indepth portraits of artists and their process of creating work. The tendency of television to relegate art to a few sound bites in an item of a couple of minutes, or the majority of Internet content that uses slick music backgrounds for footage that has had its colour enhanced or slo-mo'd for effect is, in our humble opinion, short changing both the artist and the audience. CC makes longer duration films, without the intrusion of a voice over or mood music, to give the creative process time to be appreciated through a simpler, more direct portrait of the artist.

We do, of course, create short films for clients as promotional and informational videos for immediate online use. But, we also have our eye on the bigger picture and our longer durational films are made with the future in mind as that content grows in relevance and therefore of increasing value to the artist over time.

CC aims to show the art on behalf of the artist and not use the films as an opportunity for us to show off our fancy effects. We believe that the craft of film making is best when an audience is unaware of it. We hope that our film making does not intrude on the truth of the subject that we are documenting.

Having said that of course, we understand that a film can not be a strictly truthful representation. The process of film making is always an interpretation of the truth. A film is a series of little lies and tricks, but through these falsehoods we hope our films tell a bigger truth. We also work with artists to make their art films where the craft of film making may be an integral part of the work itself.

Our basic filming unit is a single camera operator and a broadcast standard HD camera. Depending on the project we can enhance that capability considerably. We have two broadcast standard HD cameras and a broadcast standard 4K/HD camera. We have a couple of 4K/HD GoPro's (sturdy cameras that attach to vehicles, film underwater, get knocked about a bit, etc) and a Insta Pro2 360 camera, 3 x Insta 360 cameras and a GoPro Max 360' camera. And we have two Livestream Switchers, dedicated units that allow us to vision mix between our cameras, even take a feed from Skype or Zoom, and put it all up online instantly for live events. We have Avid and Premiere Pro edit suites to turn what we shoot into films.

For instance.....

We make documentary films about artists and theit creative process. This includes hour long films on BBC 4, BBC Wales and on S4C as well as the films we make for the Culture Colony web site.

Artist Films - We have worked with a number of artists creating films as part of their own portfolio, using animation and other creative techniques in the filming and editing process'.

We provide pre recorded and live video for projections in theatrical performances (Persians NTW, Coriolan/Us NTW & The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Mares Tale Theatre Brycheiniog, On Bear Ridge The Royal Court & NTW).

Conference - Arts Council of Wales, Cardiff With Culture, Creative Wales Awards.

Performance - The documentation of Theatre and Concert events, indoors and outdoors.

Exhibitions - We make videos documenting exhibitions and videos that are an integral part of exhibitions exploring the artists creative process and bringing added value to the visitors experience.

Music Videos - We record live concerts and make pop videos.

Promotional Videos - this service can be part of a package, for instance the National Museum of Wales commissioned four films for the exhibition Bregus?/Fragile? from us and as a bonus we also made three promo films in the run up to the exhibition and a further four short films with interviews for their information centre. Longer films were then made with the material and put on the Culture Colony web site. Or the service can be commissioned as a promotional video in its own right, for instance the film we made about the Artist Rooms Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition at Aberystwyth Arts Centre that featured the photographs and two interviews with artists who discussed the influence this iconic work had on them.

Behind the scenes - EPK (Electronic Press Kit), we have documented the 'behind the scenes' process of creating television drama (Hinterland/Y Gwyll, The Pembrokeshire Murders) and films for the cinema (The Passing/Yr Ymadawiad, Denmark). We have also provided this service for theatre (NTW 21 - Coriolan/Us, Hansel & Gretel, The Last 5 Years).

Live online broadcast - Sandbox for Migrations at Llawn04, Jan Morris in conversation at Plas Glyn y Weddw, Arts Council of Wales Conference, The Aber Awards, Georgia Ruth Concert at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Season Salon with Mike Parker (a series of chat show programmes broadcast from our own live studio in Machynlleth), as well as a number of other events.

Archive - CCV is the 'go to' place for content featuring artists. For the past few years our archive has been used on BBC Wales/ BBC4's Story of Welsh Art, BBC Wales' Arts Review of the Year and a compilation film of Welsh artists made from our archive greets visitors at Cardiff International Airport.

360' filming - Culture Colony can now offer photography and filming in 360' to create content that shows an all around view for use on mobile devices and VR headsets as well as desktop computers. CC is a very flexible production company and it is always worth getting in touch with us to have a chat about your project and how we might be able to help to either document the work or create content for the work itself. We can tailor our fee to your budget whether you are a television broadcaster, a major organisation, an artist group or an individual artist. We want your art to happen and thats always our starting point.

All of our clients and the artists we film have a Profile created here on the Culture Colony web site so that the media created by us and articles written for the web site can all be found in the same place.
