2016 Arts Council of Wales Artists in Residence at Penrhyn Castle

Three artists spent time this winter at Penrhyn Castle, meeting local residents and those connected with the slate-quarrying industry that once paid for the castle, tasked with uncovering the previously untold history of the place. They use stories from the people.

Joanne Wardrop’s Architecture + Entertainment = Archi-tainment is a play on the romantic, fantasy nature of the mock-Norman Penrhyn Castle. The carpet illustrates stories of the place, of its past and present inhabitants, gathered by talking with people who have grown up or work in ‘the shadow’ of Penrhyn.

Robyn Woolston’s ‘Strike Penrhyn’ places the voice of the community within the walls of the castle, against the backdrop of the Great Strike of 1900-1903. Trade union banners accompany a documentary film about the second Lord Penrhyn and the experiences of local quarrymen, past and present.

Penrhyn Castle Grand Hall, and in two sites on Bethesda’s high street (Caffi Coed y Brenin and Siop Ogwen) Lisa Heledd Jones has armchairs and headphones where you can sit and listen to short stories inspired by and including the voices and sounds of local people and places.
