Rebecca Gould visits the future in an exhibition that brings together technology and abstraction in the work of two artists.

Bocs Celf supports young art students and emerging artists by showcasing them in the historical town of Caernarfon in North Wales. James Harper has been commissioned to curate an exhibition, bringing together two artists whose practices reflect one another. Mike Carney creates what he describes asdigital drawings with an iPad and human touch; and Ed Spence makes collages andpixelates some of the images using hand and blade. This fear of technology finds its origins with the Romanticism movement of the 1800 s from Mary Shelley s Frankenstein to Robocop we are constantly anxious and fearful of the future; the unknown. The role that electronic devices and robots play within society in the 21st century is a complicated one; most of us carry small screens around with us constantly with access to the Internet, banking, shopping, video calls, maps, etc.

As you enter the shop style room, two works are on opposing walls, a sparse display suiting both. 25th November, by Mike Carney, a Samsung flat screen monitor mounted on the wall, never changing clouds on an aqua background.

Bulldog clips hold a holographic print on paper, Pinhole Galaxy II, by Ed Spence. Canadian Spence takes a photograph of a crumpled piece of reflective paper, prints the image and then using a knife and a ruler cuts a part of it into small squares, rearranging them based on colour. He says,No information is lost or gained. I remember that I ve just bought a silver holographic backpack; I said it was for my baby daughter but really it was for me.

At the very top of the stairs there is a small room where Spence has another three holographic works, different colour tones of the same format. A square orb centre, an apocalyptic sun or disco balls complied of anally cut out squares, reminds me of those Magic Eye posters that were such a massive craze in the 90s. I can t help feeling that the process is somewhat forced. The word robot has come from the Czech robota, meaningservitude, forced labour .

Spence s lack of economy almost makes him a slave to his own mechanism. My favourite work in the show is Untitled by Mike Carney, a large silver flat screen propped in the corner of the room. Something resembling a head emerges from the gesture on the screen. The display device, the monitor, becomes sculptural in its positioning allowing multiple readings. I wanted to see Untitled given the space to function as a multi-layered work, it d have benefited in having the whole room to itself. The silver frame of the monitor encases the gestural mark that functions as some sort ofghost in the shell .

I had many likes and dislikes however it was hugely refreshing to see an attempt in reassessing abstraction take place in North Wales.
