Seagulls - Volcano Theatre Company Image - Erin Rickard

Step off the High Street onto the shores of a Russian lake, specially installed with the help of Swansea Fire Brigade. Join the actors by the lake, where someone has decided to put on a play, someone else has decided to spoil it, and everybody is busy making life difficult for themselves and everyone around them.

Seagulls isa pared-down and noised-up adaptation of Chekhov s first spectacular flop, The Seagull. It's the second piece to be created by Volcano Theatre especially for the company s new home, the atmospheric and evolving Bunker Theatre, deep inside a former Iceland frozen food store in Swansea High Street.

The show is innovatively staged, showcasing the character of the Bunker Theatre, with a spare wooden set, a specially-made lake, and a system of ropes and pulleys enabling the actors to perform at different levels.

Classic drama meets Volcano madness, promising a remarkable and fun night out and a chance to get your nose in the door at the new Iceland venue. The company s previous site-specific show in the building was Black Stuff, when they filled the basement with eight tonnes of coal and led an audience through a subterranean labyrinth, in a surreal exploration of lives and imaginations shaped by coal mining. Among the cast and creative team are several alumni of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (*), which continues to be a rich source of theatrical talent for the new generation of Volcano productions.
