Venus and Adonis will be performed at Spit and Sawdust this Saturday The Baroque Opera, Venus and Adonis will be performed at Spit and Sawdust this Saturday

Spit and Sawdust indoor skate park will play host to a performance of Baroque Opera from the 1600s, Venus and Adonis

The classic love story will be performed by singers from Opera Mint, and musicians from Pavane Early Music Consort. The production is directed by Hannah Noone.

Venus and Adonis is the earliest surviving British Opera. It was composed around 1680 by John Blow and explores the extremes of love and loss. Unusually for early operas this one ends in a whirlwind of tragedy.

Christian Hart (one of Spit & Sawdust s Director s) said:We ve been watching rehearsals and it promises to be an exciting night, we ve even got some skateboarders involved in the action. As well as being a skatepark Spit & Sawdust is a community space, we want people from all walks of life and ages to meet and have fun here. The tickets are hopefully affordable for most people, and we ve included food and time for socialising .

Steve Metcalfe from Pavane Early Music Group said:

Unsurprisingly we ve never played in a skatepark before. We re hoping that people who don t normally go to operas might give this one a go. It will be a relaxed, fun event .
The opera has already been performed in Saint Edwards Church in Roath and Tredegar house in Newport, but this staging promises to bring something new and unique to its audience. The performance will be accompanied by food and a fire pit, promising to be quite the spectacle. If you ve ever wanted to watch an early baroque opera performed on period instruments in a skatepark now may be your only chance!

Spit and Sawdust will host 'Venus and Adonis' on 26 Septemeber. Tickets are4 or3.50 for Under 16s and are available direct from Spit and Sawdust or via WeGotTickets. Doors open at 9pm.
