Tom Woods - Father and Sunset, 2000

Tom Wood, who lives in North Wales, has established an international reputation as a photographer of people. This touring exhibition, however, concentrates on his landscape photography, which until recently was relatively unknow

Adopting an open and expansive approach to the genre of landscape, Tom Wood - Landscapes, curated by Mark Durden, presents, for the first time, a selection Wood s extensive and varied pictures made in response to the West of Ireland, Merseyside and North Wales.

The photographs made in the West of Ireland, County Mayo, show the wild and remote landscape of the artist s birthplace and childhood. They will be shown alongside fragile fragments of surviving family photographs, family videos and affectionate portraits of day-to-day life within a rural community.

Woods lived and worked in Merseyside for 25 years, so these landscapes address a more urban environment and are very much concerned with the relationships and attachments that people have with places.

In 2003 Wood moved to the Vale of Clwyd in North Wales. He uses a panoramic format camera, which allows him to create expansive and detailed views of natural phenomena and are integral to hiss primary concern with the value of the photograph as a picture rather than a document.
